This project consists of five two-bedroom bungalows, designed for Bristol City Council. Each of the new homes meets the Accessible and Adaptable Dwellings standard (Category 2 of Part M of the Building Regulations), featuring wide doorways, spacious circulation areas, and level access throughout.

 

The north-south orientation of the site allows the homes to incorporate asymmetrical pitched roofs, with photovoltaic panels on the south-facing roofs and roof windows on the north side, bringing natural light into the centre of the homes. The front elevations of the houses are set back with large recesses, providing shade to the kitchen windows and creating sheltered spaces within the generous front gardens—designed to encourage social interaction between residents.

 

Located in Brislington, Bristol, the site was formerly a council depot and is now surrounded by existing back gardens. The design required careful consideration of access for larger vehicles, the integration of an existing electricity substation, and maintaining privacy and amenity for both current and future residents. The new road on the site is named after a relative of one of the project team members, who used to live nearby.

 

The project was completed in 2019.
