This project, designed for Bristol City Council, comprises 11 two-bedroom houses and 2 one-bedroom flats, all for council tenants as part of the council’s New Build Programme to address housing needs in the city.

 

The site is located on the urban fringe of Broomhill in Bristol, directly opposite an existing play area and nature reserve. The design focused on providing natural surveillance of the play area while also maximizing longer-range views of the nature reserve. Large feature windows on the first floor of the houses were strategically positioned to enhance both the surveillance of the play area and the views across the nature reserve. In addition, an improved pedestrian crossing was incorporated to enhance access to the park. The site layout had to consider existing infrastructure, including an electricity substation on the site’s edge and a public sewer crossing the center. It incorporates a shared surface access road and turning area, with new homes fronting onto Ferry Close and houses facing Eastwood Road and Jersey Avenue.

 

The homes were designed to be contemporary in style while reflecting the local environment through their material selection. The buildings are highly insulated and airtight, and the site incorporates sustainable drainage for surface water management, as well as photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate on-site renewable energy.

 

The project was completed in 2019.
