We are helping coordinate the co-design of a specialist housing project for the ‘Flourish Five’ – a group of young autistic adults with multiple learning disabilities. This project is built on the vision of enabling managed independence in a safe, secure, and non-institutional environment, allowing each resident to thrive throughout their lifetime.

 

Working closely with the Flourish Five families, we have developed a design brief that responds to the unique needs of each resident. Through collaborative workshops, we established key design principles: calming, safe, and engaging spaces tailored to individual requirements while encouraging social interaction in shared environments. This process tested different models to creating a home for life, from independently owned through government backed mortgages, to group onwed co-housing and speclist supported housing provided by others.

 

The development will provide at least five self-contained homes, with some residents having the potential to share accommodation. The design aims to incorporate private and communal spaces, ensuring both privacy and opportunities for social engagement. Thoughtful transitions between spaces will help residents manage daily routines and interactions comfortably.

 

The project prioritises location, ensuring residents remain close to their families and support networks. The ideal site will provide access to green spaces, minimise exposure to unpredictable surroundings, and accommodate future changes in care needs. The homes will meet high accessibility standards (M4(3)) and incorporate sustainable design principles, aligning with local authority planning policies.

 

By partnering with registered housing providers and Bristol City Council, this initiative seeks to deliver a sustainable and financially viable model through Specialised Supported Housing (SSH). The development will not only provide high-quality homes but also set a precedent for future inclusive housing projects, ensuring that young adults with complex needs can live fulfilling and independent lives within their chosen community.
