Islington Road
Southville, Bristol
We have developed planning and technical designs for a new build 3-bed house and studio, for a young family on a constrained corner site in south Bristol.
Sitting within the Bedminster Conservation Area, materials and details were carefully chosen to provide a contemporary yet sensitive response to the historical character of the area and the existing building on the site, including panels of angled bricks to reflect historic openings along the main street frontage. A change to the ground floor level, relative to the pavement that borders the southern and eastern edges of the site, created a generous ceiling height in the main living space, central to which is a bespoke metal staircase.
Heating and hot water is provided by an air-source heat pump and the building is mechanically ventilated, with warmth recovered from exhaust air to heat incoming fresh air (MVHR). Fabric performance and airtightness have been optimised to reduce heating demand.
The project was completed in January 2023.
