Southville, Bristol

Working with our clients, Tom and George, we developed planning and technical designs for a new 3-bedroom house and studio located on a constrained corner site on Islington Road, South Bristol.

Situated within the Bedminster Conservation Area, the materials and details were carefully selected to provide a contemporary yet sensitive response to the historical character of the area and the existing building on the site.

For example, panels of angled bricks reflect historic openings along the main street frontage. A change in the ground floor level, relative to the pavement bordering the southern and eastern edges of the site, creates a generous ceiling height in the main living space. Central to this space is a bespoke metal staircase and a large window looking through to the studio. Both the studio and living space open out to a small courtyard garden.

Heating and hot water are provided by an air-source heat pump, and the building is mechanically ventilated with warmth recovered from exhaust air to heat incoming fresh air (MVHR). The building’s fabric performance and airtightness have been optimised to reduce heating demand.

The project was completed in January 2023.
